The Duwamish River is the name of the lower 12 miles of Washington State’s Green River and empties into Elliott Bay on Puget Sound. Long a section contaminated by pollutants from Seattle’s industrial core, a cooperative ecosystem restoration project involving the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, King County, the Washington State Department of Natural Resources, and Doyon is now complete at Duwamish Site 1, North Wind’s Weir. Named for both a rocky ledge that juts into the river and a device for capturing fish, the North Wind’s Weir project site is designed to offer federally protected Chinook salmon with a shallow water habitat, feeding opportunities, and plenty of hiding places as they make the transition from freshwater to saltwater.
